2000 word review.

The concept of our piece was to go inside the mind of someone who suffers from paranoia by using tension and unusual sounds and words to highlight what paranoia really means.  We wanted to create paranoia as an actual sound by distorting our own recordings. I thought this would actually make the audience know what we were trying to achieve.  By using colours and text throughout our piece going from calm to a build up of tension to total paranoia worked hand in hand with our audio and worked to tell a day in the life of story. We didn’t want the piece to be completely paced especially when the character is paranoid to represent a real mind and jumbled thoughts when he’s paranoid.

My influences for this piece come from watching shows such as Bedlam on Channel 4 and films such as Black Swan and also the pieces  watched in seminars. It influenced me to create what a sense of place means to someone who is vulnerable and uncomfortable. These examples both had a really distinctive effect on me that interested me into using this topic and using extremes.

Bedlam specifically focuses on real life people who have problems such as paranoia so this really helped me to sympathise and get in the mind set to create sounds that would be accurate and what paranoid people actually think when they’re vulnerable and nervous.
Black swan uses really distinctive extreme sounds which made me think about using a specific sound that I think represents paranoia as a whole. I thought that this would be a really unusual and distinctive sound.  Also, watching pieces in class such as “Telling Lies” and “Tunnel Vision” really made me go in depth and think about how the sounds should stand out.  By constantly watching and listening to experimental work I feel I developed my own knowledge.

“Telling Lies” I felt  really inspired by this piece in particular as it showed what the character was really feeling rather than saying which is similar to my piece as the emotions and words are what he really feels rather than what is obvious around him. In my piece – how the character reacts in the coffee shop which is a normal setting for people without paranoia.

I didn’t really have a specific audience as paranoia is something anyone can have and is a popular disorder people can relate to. I thought that however, this piece would be suited more to a mature audience e.g. 18+ as paranoia is a subject that can be triggering.  I think this would raise awareness to people without paranoia as someone you see in the street could be panicking and feeling really paranoid so this piece would work well with a normal mature audience.  I took a  simple audience into consideration and hopefully the piece makes people sympathetic towards paranoia and how other minds can work. It should really shock and make the audience feel tense as they listen to the breathing and silence and the distortion.  I think that this worked well and when the audience listened they received the emotions I wanted.

When listening back to the finished audio piece it was very obvious to me that a lot of things weren’t working. This told me that I needed to keep playing the audio over out loud as I had missed some crucial factors in creating a paranoid story. In our first crit we realised some of our sounds were not playing and this was because the sound levels were not loud enough. I was disappointed that this happened and made sure for future reference to check the levels out loud. Another thing that wasn’t successful was often how repetitive some sounds were I ended up taking these out after the crit. They ended up being too noticeable and making our story  repetitive especially as the character has phases. This made our piece not have build up which was really important to us.  We made lots of changes to the piece and I do feel like the piece works well and tells a good story now but upon reflection we needed more sounds to work with and we really needed to push ourselves to try new things regarding being experimental. We stayed too safe when figuring out how to tell the story and I feel that there still isn’t enough tension or build up in the audio.  The sounds and final edit do sound good and the theme is really apparent.

The video feedback was really positive and overall, I feel that the video was the most successful part and only needed a few changes. The audience really understood what we were trying to achieve which enabled them to give us really useful feedback. I do think that the audio did slightly let down the video as there wasn’t enough sound build up and tension to match the words and colours on screen. Upon reflection, I would definitely try and change some of the transitions but as this was a first attempt I felt it still worked well but it wasn’t exactly as visioned.

If I could make the piece again I would give myself more planning time and think about how to create certain emotions and how to build up.  I would also push myself more to try new things using software e.g editing the words differently on the video. I would make sure to have contingency options for anything that could potentially go wrong and make more time to create the project.  I think I stayed too safe as it was my first project but I have a lot to reflect on for the future.

In the sound phase my primary role was editing the recorded sounds. I worked using Soundtrack Pro rather than Pro Tools as I was more confident using this software, however I think I should have pushed myself to use new software and learn as I create.  I also encountered problems with exporting the sound and getting it to burn on to a disc but I also felt I didn’t leave enough time for errors such as these. I rushed too much towards the end and this had an effect on the piece when playing it to an audience. We went back to this and made sure to take planning into more detailed consideration. Editing went well and I used some advanced techniques and taught myself how to use the recordings in a new way to create atmosphere. What I did on soundtrack was put audio on different layers (atmosphere, distortion and ambience.) This helped me know what sounds were where.  Here our screengrab.

As you can see,I used the distortion effect on Soundtrack Pro and applied it to a clip of recorded ambient sound. I originally wanted to reduce the noise on this clip but after some trial and error with the clip and the noise reduction taking too much of the sound out I heard this through using distortion. By twisting the knobs on this effect to different levels and playing it back you can see how I created the static empty sound that represents paranoia in my piece.  This improved my piece and added strange effects that worked well.  However, I feel  that I should have rectified the problem with the noise reduction.

The sound was clear and crisp and you could clearly hear the sounds and after boosting the sound levels they sounded really distinctive. I wanted the sounds of the public places to be clear and loud but not take anything away from the sounds of panic I layered on top of those sounds. Here you can see how I changed the sound levels in my edit as I wanted them to notice each sound.

When editing the video I found this to be the easiest part of the process. We knew what we wanted to do and both took on different parts of the video.  Here are 2 examples of the different emotions in our piece and how we created them:

As you can see, by using different fonts and colours on our piece it really separates the emotion and helps the audio tell the story and stand out more. It helps our audio have tension and understanding.
We created these by using solid colour blocks on Final Cut Pro and adding moving text  to each word. We also added cross fades on the peaceful scenes to get them to flow calmly into each other and then used block colour black when he was paranoid to show anger.

I feel that the overall theme of the piece worked well sound wise after each sound had been edited.  The video was a lot better and just made the audio piece feel so much smoother.
The piece did turn out completely different to what I imagined as my idea was perhaps a little too excessive and out of reach for a 3 minute piece.  The video is roughly what I imagined as I did find it really difficult to get the text to transition differently so I used the same transitions throughout. This is repetitive but for something I have never done I was quite impressed. I really liked editing on the video and feel that I could really express my idea more using abstraction. I also do believe my piece is abstract.
I think that my contribution overall was strong and I did feel like I put a lot of effort and creativity into the piece.  I really knew what I wanted to achieve and  tried really hard to make it a strong first piece of work.  Regardless of the problems we had the piece has really worked off.

I have learnt a lot throughout this project especially in a creative manner. I have picked up some specific skills both technical and creative:
-          Extending my current knowledge of Final Cut Pro & Soundtrack Pro.
By using this software and by simply using trial and error I taught myself a variety of new techniques such as moving text, distorting, and noise reduction.   I approached the software in a completely new way and really pushed myself to try and find out how to do new techniques and even finding out by myself.                                                                                                                                                              How to create an abstract piece of work:
I was always too focused on making my stories include a linear narrative with footage and simple sounds. I have learnt how to express myself more within my work and let my creativity come out more. I feel in this piece I really wanted to have a strong input and make my work stand out creatively.
The importance of research.
I realised quickly how important it is to fully research ideas and really know how to achieve certain results. By keeping a blog I feel that my work has been more focused and accurate because I can refer back to my research. I also made sure to watch pieces of work in my own time and analyse them to gain inspiration for my work.
Teamwork & communication
The importance of teamwork and communication in this project was also crucial and I feel like I have become better at working as part of a team just as you do in industry.  Working with a partner who has different ideas can be difficult but we worked really well together and stuck to our plans well and kept in communication.

I think that me and Jess worked really well together and shared a lot of the same thoughts when it came to creating an experimental piece.  We both contributed equally and set each other tasks to complete and shared the work equally. My weaknesses in teamwork are mainly not expressing my ideas clearly and not being visual enough when explaining. I think overall teamwork is something I am good at. I will improve by making my communication stronger and scheduling better. I think creating a specific time table to work would have helped us, al

Planning

This was a planning document I made that consisted of key words, phrases, definitions and films which helped me plan my work and make sure I really captured the correct theme especially when thinking about abstraction and experimental film. Having a list of words, sounds and films really helped us gather research and inspiration when making our work. The words shown on the list also helped me to think about what kind of sounds could I use to represent these words? E.g. Feeling nervous could involve lots of heavy movement and fidgeting which I put into my coffee shop scene.
We also did storyboards to help us plan the video after we did the sound. This was important as we needed to decide on what colours and words to use at what points.

Feedback on the unfinished audio piece.

These are examples of feedback given to me from my peers. This was really useful as we could see what was working and what wasn't by testing it out on an audience. Obviously due to the problems we encountered when playing our sound back our audience didn't really understand what we were trying to pull off here. Our paranoid scenes e.g. in the coffee shop didn't play so the audio made no sense. Our audience wrote what they liked and didn't like, and upon observation the notes were similar. People really liked our distorted effect and breathing but felt there was too much of it so when we came back to edit this was something we changed by adding more depth where those sounds were and limiting the repetitive sounds and even removing some completely. We did more research after the feedback to improve upon the feedback we had received. I feel the feedback was fair and critical and really helped us to improve and research more.

Editing the video.

For our video we decided to use block colours that work well with the emotions he's feeling and the text on screen.
We started the edit whilst working with the sound as we wanted to see how well paced the piece would be with the words. Although we did want pace we also wanted it to not make sense as in the words would be at random speeds as we're focusing more on his mind in the video rather than the outside world. Not being a perfect pace cut made it seem like the character was thinking more rapidly and his mood was changing quickly. Overall, the edit went well after getting tutor feedback as we realised that we needed to focus more on the text and how that would look rather than using a mixture of text and pictures. We realised that the piece needed to be more simplistic in order to work well with the complicated emotion of the piece. We edited quickly and worked well as a team taking turns to edit sections e.g. I worked on calm and Jess worked on paranoia. We both researched lots of interesting words and looked into colours. I feel confident working on Final Cut Pro and feel I was efficient as an editor however, I feel that I should have asked more questions and been more upfront about things I was unsure on as it turned out I was editing in the wrong codec.

We edited using Final Cut Pro. Here are screenshots of the edit:
As you can see we used different fonts for each phase e.g. calm and panic. I think that this worked really well and established a build up and difference in mood and tension. The size difference also shows how strongly the character feels especially as he's at his most vulnerable. Using the colour block function on Final Cut Pro we managed to use different colours for every word using pastels for calm times and bright vivid dangerous colours for the panic.

Research into experimental piece.

Bedlam:
Bedlam is a show on Channel 4 that focuses on people who are in a mental institution. Watching people with real mental issues such as paranoia helped me choose the right words to put in my piece. This was really useful as it made me realise how much a person with these problems suffer and exactly what is going on inside their mind. We watched 3 episodes of the show on 4od. After watching this we came up with a list of words that were used in the show that related to how the character was going to be feeling at his most vulnerable. Accuracy was a big part when choosing the right words for our project. The people in the show used very expressive words that really shocked and stood out to the audience which made you want to think about how they must be feeling. The people in the show were stressed and nervous about their conditions as they couldn't really control it which is what our character feels like as he becomes more paranoid. To express this with the words we thought using colours associated with stress and danger would help show this more. E.g. colours such as red which symbolises danger would work well when the character is feeling vulnerable.
Choice of words:
We also looked online for words, especially for the more paranoid moments as I felt that these words needed to be unusual and expressive and strong to really bring out a sense of paranoia. I felt it was important to look for words to do with panic and unease without using those typical words repetitively. After looking on this website we developed our list and made our paranoid scenes.

Black Swan:
I watched this particular scene in the film "Black Swan" as I noticed that this film had some very distinctive sounds and imagery within it and had some themes that matched my idea. I drew a lot of inspiration from this scene.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_LtAV_rdzh0
In this scene what stood out to me was the build up of sound and how the pace of it worked with the scene incredibly well. The character is terrified as she becomes the black swan and doesn't want her mother to see. What I liked was how distinctive and loud the sound was when the mothers fingers are trapped in the door. The door itself really stands out and makes you feel really nervous. As well as this I like how emphasised some sounds are such as the heavy breathing and the way the characters knees crack. In my piece I want key sounds to be emphasized as they have more meaning which should make the audience question and feel certain emotion.

Colours:
I mainly researched the colours I would be using for my paranoid scenes as they need to stand out more whereas the calm scenes are a little more obvious colour wise. E.g. I will be using pastels and light airy colours to represent a calm emotion which will switch to vivid colours.
This website I looked at told me the meaning of colours and this really helped me make my desicions although I did not follow the meanings exactly as I wanted to use really bright colours to show paranoia. I liked that red symbolises danger because the character will feel as if he's in danger as he becomes more and more paranoid. I wanted also to use a bright blue which to me stands out as a warning colour which will contrast with a pastel blue I will use in the calm scenes. However, blue usually symbolises calm but making it bright will hopefully stand out to the audience.

Research & Inspiration.

Watching videos in the seminars also made me think more about the development of my idea and helped me think of more abstract pieces as I felt that I struggled with thinking of something completely abstract as I worried it wouldn't make sense. I took most inspiration from contemporary abstract pieces.

The first piece was Star Guitar by The Chemical Brothers.
http://vimeo.com/1255501
What struck me about this piece was the pace of the images and that they matched the sound exactly and each image represented a piece of the sound. In my piece I really wanted to focus on pace to build up tension and using colours as a way to express pace each time the characters emotion changes and considering the character is paranoid I thought this would work really well. This piece is also abstract so it helped me think about how to set my piece out in terms of narrative. It made me think about the pace of the piece too and that should be something important to focus on if I continue to use abstraction.

Telling Lies by Simon Ellis.
http://vimeo.com/19974262
I had a really similar idea to this piece of work. I thought about using words on screen to show what the characters really feeling which juxtaposes the "normal" sounds in my piece such as the coffee shop. What this piece does is show the conversation on screen but changes words to show what the character is really thinking even though he's lying on the phone. I really liked this idea to show real emotions and how they contrast from what you hear. It works well with the theme of paranoia as the character is going to be feeling quite expressive emotions when he's paranoid even though the sounds around him are "normal" to most people. I think this will work well with the use of colour and pace in the film.

Tunnel Vision by Pejk Malinovski.
This piece really made me think about the depth of my sounds in my audio piece as the sounds were really distinctive and strange. Most of the sounds were really unusual and distorted which I thought worked really well within this piece. I took this into my own project thinking about how I can make paranoia into a sound that stands out. I really wanted it to sound "other worldly" like the sounds in this piece. I thought also about panning the sound in the paranoid stage so it came through one channel like the sounds travelling. Overall, this piece really inspired me to think about what I could make paranoia sound like. I thought it would sound weird and twisted and like it's not human. This piece has a really strong sci-fi like effect which I really liked.

audio lists

This is a list of all the sound we recorded:
Most of the sound was repeated throughout the piece and we tried to mess around with the sounds by editing them with distortion.

Footsteps - recorded at home
Doors - recorded at home
Ambient sound - recorded in a quiet park location
Coffee shop - recorded in Starbucks, Sheffield
Heartbeat - recorded in a quiet room
Distortion sound - originally ambient sound which was recorded outside
Cathedral - this wasn't used but we recorded inside the cathedral in Sheffield centre.
Children laughing - recorded in Sheffield walking towards the winter gardens.
